William R (Bill) Swanson is a seasoned photographer, event reporter and videographer. My primary focus is on motorsports, and local news. I have also enjoyed a productive 40 plus year career as a mechanical engineering professional. That experience also defines my approach to this craft. Professional, Technical and Practical.
It started when I received my first real camera at 10 years of age. I began photographing street and show cars, racing when the opportunity presented itself, and anything else that interested me.
My first trackside assignment was the 1988 NHRA Northstar Nationals in Brainerd, MN on behalf of a former employer. Additional trackside work followed at venues such as Indianapolis Raceway Park and Road America. Research and documentary photography of automotive and industrial subjects on behalf of my employers remains an ongoing responsibility.
Increased responsibilities in my Mechanical Engineering career put serious photography on hiatus for several years. Suddenly in 2012, the opportunity to return trackside was presented by Bobby Bennett of CompetitionPlus.com. Of course we responded enthusiastically.
Soon after, WR Swanson Photography & Media was created to provide all encompassing race day photography services. Production of written features, race day reports, press releases and video production soon followed. This content has been published in print and online at multiple outlets. Additional responsibilities include official photographer for the Midwest Nostalgia Pro Stock Association, and publicity photos for companies and organizations including Byron Dragway and Great Lakes Dragaway. Beyond motorsports, we’re also proud to work with Nadig Newspapers, a Chicago based newspaper covering the Northwest side of the city. Published work here includes breaking news and coverage of community events.
Providing high quality images for promotional materials and art prints to a growing list of clients also remains of the upmost importance to me.
